In the middle ages Pocitelj was the administrative center of the Dubrava county. It had a huge strategic importance. It is assumed that the founder of Pocitelj was Stjepan Tvrtko I, in the year of 1383. Pocitelj was constantly being developed from 16th to 18th century.
In written documents, Pocitelj was first mentioned in 1444. in the books of Alfons V and Fridrih III. In the period between 1463.-1471. Pocitelj was the capital of the Otoman impery.
There are three influences that gave Pocitelj the look it's got today:
1. King Matija Korvin, 2. Otoman impery (islamic architecture), 3. Mlecani
In 1878. Pocitelj looses it's strategic position and remains a historic monument...
